Rio San Juan Nicaragua Culture, Accommodations, and Activities
The Rio San Juan was the only way to get from the Atlantic to the Pacific before the construction of the Panama Canal.  The Spanish controlled this waterway for hundreds of years and the history along this river is incredible.  In the center of the river there is a set of rapids that boats traveling on the river hundreds of years ago had to navigate very carefully in order to safely make it across.  The Spanish constructed El Castillo, a large Spanish fort here at the rapids to maintain control of this waterway many years ago.  The fort still stands and tours are available most days to see it and learn some of the history surrounding this unique outpost.  Rio San Juan is also home to some of the best tarpon, snook, and gar fishing in the world.
